Wortmann Family Visits the July 13th Gregory County Historical Society

Pictured above is the Wortmann family:  Meredith (10), Holly (Mother), Elizabeth (16), Sophia (14), and Meredith (10).

Elizabeth & Sophia visited with the Gregory County Historical members about their National History Day Projects.  Those projects included:

2018/19 – Elizabeth – Mistrust & Misunderstanding:  A Deadly Clash at Wounded Knee Creek.  (National winner – National Native American Award in DC)

2019/20 – Elizabeth Wortmann & Jenna Jackson – Sodbuster to Filmmaker:  The Journey of Oscar Micheaux (State Winner from Nebraska Humanitites)

2020/21 – Sophia Wortmann & Rylie Arens – The Children’s Blizzard:  The Advent of Communicating Meteorology (National winner – National Agricultural and Rural Living Award in DC)

The group then watched the Oscar Micheaux video done by Elizabeth and her partner Jenna.

St. Rose of Lima School in Crofton, NE participates every year in the National History Day competition.  Mrs. Ginger Schieffer is the sponsor and teacher.  The kids participate at the local level, advancing to  Regionals at Northeast Community College, then the State of Nebraska at Nebraska Wesleyan College in Lincoln, and finally to the National level at the University of Maryland, outside Washington, DC.  They start their projects in October and ending in June, building their bibliography of primary and secondary sources.
